Weight Management

Help your pet maintain a healthy weight with our weight management program.

Whether they’re carrying a little extra weight from the holidays, or have enjoyed one too many treats, excess fat is not ideal for your pet’s overall health. Like with humans, getting to a healthier weight involves more than just eating less and exercising more. Our team of licensed vets and RVTs are here to help get your pet reach their ideal weight in a safe way. Please give us a call to learn more.

How much should I feed my pet each day?

This will vary based on your pet’s species, breed, age and current health status. Generally speaking, dogs should be given the following amount of food per day:

  • Toy Breeds: 0.30 cup to 0.50 cup
  • Small Breeds: 0.75 cup to 1.5 cups
  • Medium Breeds (30 to 50 pounds): 1.75 to 2.60 cups
  • Large Breeds (50 to 100 lbs.): 2.60 to 4.25 cups (0.25 cup for every 10 lbs. of body weight over 100 lbs.)

Cats, on the other hand, may follow the following serving sizes per day:

  • Wet Food: Less than 6 oz.
  • Dry Food: 4/5 of a cup

How many treats should a pet have a day?

It’s a good idea to use treats as a form of reward or positive reinforcement, but use them sparingly. Treats should make up approximately 10% of your pet’s daily caloric intake. One or two treats per day is best for most furry friends.

How can I help my pet lose/gain weight?

If you think your pet is overweight or underweight, we suggest coming in for a veterinary exam. There may be underlying medical reasons that have caused their weight change. The vet can help you with the proper treatment plan (along with any diet recommendations, exercises, supplements, and techniques) that can address your pet’s unique situation.
