Why would a pet need an ultrasound or X-ray?

During a routine exam, your doctor may notice something that needs closer inspection. This is when an imaging test will be ordered. Also, if your pet has been injured, accidentally swallowed something, is pregnant or has any kind of suspicious growth, these scans may be requested.

How should I prep my pet for an ultrasound or X-ray?

There are usually no preparations needed for X-rays. For an ultrasound, you may be asked to have your pet fasted anywhere from 8 to 12 hours beforehand for optimal results. We may also have to shave a small portion of your pet’s fur so the probe can go over the area undisturbed.

Do pets need to be sedated for an ultrasound or X-ray?

It depends. If your pet is particularly anxious, or if they have to be placed in a very awkward position for the scan, or if they have aggressive tendencies, then we may sedate them. This can prevent any stress. For the most part, we do not sedate our patients for these tests.
