Every year, thousands of unclaimed pets end up in animal rescues. Unfortunately, these shelters cannot take care of all cherished pets in the long term. Getting your furry friend spayed or neutered is a way for you to directly make a positive impact on this problem. Aside from preventing unwanted pregnancies and overpopulation, there are several health benefits for your loyal companion. Call us at 905-685-7349 to learn more.
This is the layman’s term for the surgeries that stop your pet from producing their own offspring. Spaying is the removal of the female reproductive organs and neutering is the removal of the male organs. These are routine surgeries and with our updated surgical suite, your furry friend will be in the best hands possible. Most patients go home the same day of their operation and recover in a matter of days.
Each pet is different and your veterinarian will let you know when it is safe for your pet to be spayed or neutered. We usually perform these procedures on patients who are about 4 to 6-months-old.
After your pet’s procedure, we will go over in detail all the steps you need to take to make sure they recover properly. We typically suggest pets get little to no exercise in the week after their surgery. You should also not bathe them during this time and keep them indoors as much as possible.
Most patients have a reduced appetite about 1 or so days after their surgery, so it’s best to give them smaller servings than they are used to (about 50% less). You can gradually increase their servings as the days go by and play it by ear. Your veterinarian will recommend a post-surgery diet for your pet. Always make sure they have access to plenty of drinking water.
