Euthanasia

Providing compassionate care during a difficult time.

Here at Hartzel Animal Hospital, we are pet parents just like you. We understand pets are more than just loyal companions, they are members of your family. When you come to the point in your journey when it may be time to say goodbye, we will be with you every step of the way. Call us at 905-685-7349 when you are ready to start the conversation about euthanasia.

When should I consider euthanasia for my pet?

As painful as it may be, euthanasia is the most humane option for pets who have a terminal or incurable disease. If they are no longer responsive to treatment/pain medications, and need significant medical intervention to be able to eat, breathe or move, then it might be time to consider euthanasia. Your veterinarian will lay out all the options available so you can make the best decision for you, your pet and your entire family.

Is it possible for pets to know they are being euthanized?

Not at all. The entire process can be completely peaceful and stress-free for the patient. We encourage you to allow your family to say goodbye to your pet, and bring their favourite toys with them the day of their procedure. If you are comfortable, you can be with them and hold their paws until the very end. We have a private room where the procedure is conducted.

Can pets wake up during their euthanasia?

This is highly unlikely. Our doctors know the proper dosage for each patient and once administered, the euthanasia drug will cause your pet to fall into a peaceful sleep. It is 100% pain-free. Then, in a few short minutes, the drug will cause their heart, lungs and other organs to stop functioning.
