Regular brushing and routine cleanings can help prevent gum disease. Contact us for more details.
Contrary to popular belief, “doggy” breath is not normal. In fact, it is one of the earliest signs of periodontal disease – an inflammation and infection of the tissues around the teeth. Our licensed veterinarians and technicians can help keep your pet’s pearly whites as healthy as possible. Call us at 905-685-7349 to find out more.
Great question! Your pet’s dental care should include more than their once or twice-a-year checkups and cleanings. Proper home care goes hand in hand with professional treatments. First, we recommend you brush your pet’s teeth daily. That may seem intimidating, but we can teach you proper techniques and suggest products that will get you into a teeth-brushing routine in no time! Also, keep your pet away from toys and objects that damage their teeth: tennis balls, branches, cow hooves, ice cubes and nylon chew toys. It is also a good idea to buy foods that promote dental health: carrots, apples, pet-friendly toothpaste and dental diets (which you can purchase at our hospital).
Cleanings can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending if any emergency extractions are required. We usually start by administering anesthesia to your pet (we assess if they are a good candidate for it and the right amount they can take).
Once the patient is peacefully unconscious, the doctor will closely examine each tooth, clean the entire mouth area (including underneath the gum line), remove plaque, polish the teeth and conduct any extractions needed. We use tools specifically designed for pets.
NOTE: Please beware of businesses that offer “anesthesia-free” cleanings. These businesses cannot properly clean your pet’s teeth, and can mask infections, plaque and other complications underneath the gum line.
