Our Team

Our goal is to provide excellent medical care in a friendly and welcoming environment.  Hartzel Animal Hospital has been operating in St. Catharines since 1954. We have an excellent staff of four veterinarians, skilled veterinary technicians and knowledgeable support staff.

Dr. Martina Bukovska

I was born in Prague, Czech Republic. In 1989, I graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno. In 1995, I obtained the Canadian Veterinary Medicine Certification after passing the National Board Exams at the Ontario Veterinary College.  In 2003, I accepted a position at Hartzel Animal Hospital and in 2005 I became the owner with Dr. Tracey Hobbs. I feel privileged to be a part of such an amazing team of compassionate and dedicated people.

I will always miss my little doxie girl, Elsa and my sad looking cocker spaniel, Charlie. At present time I spoil my little prince Oliver the wiener dog and try to follow the rules of BooBoo a mysterious black cat.

My husband, Hugo and I have a great teenage son, Michael. I love travelling with my family, hiking our Niagara Trails, watching the National Ballet of Canada performances and cheering for my son during his rowing competitions.

Dr. Tracey Hobbs

I graduated from the Ontario Vet College in 1994  (ouch)  then completed a one year internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Connecticut.  After a year in Hamilton, I returned to my home town of St Catharines  in 1996 and began working at Hartzel Animal Hospital.

Dr Martina and I became owners of the clinic in the spring of 2005.

I enjoy a busy life with two teenagers, my crazy little dog, Owen and two cats, Donny & Marie. When I can, I enjoy yoga, running, golf and travel with my family.

Dr. Keri Evers

Keri graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1999.  She then followed her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian by attending the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, PEI and graduating with honours in 2003.  After spending a brief period practicing in the U.S., she moved to Kingston and then settled in St. Catharines in 2005.  She has been a part of the Hartzel team since 2007.  She shares her life with her husband, Joel, a Siamese mix (Hershey), 2 Boston Terriers (Molson & Rum Runner), a Bullmastiff (Eowyn), and a Betta (Valentino).  In her spare time, she enjoys training and competing with the dogs in flyball and rally obedience, curling, camping, travelling and is a consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Dr. Jen McSpadden

After graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2005, I returned to my native Niagara to practice small animal medicine.  I joined the Hartzel team in April of 2012.  I am thrilled to be here, as it has been a dream to work at Hartzel since I was a high school co-op student here, scrubbing kennels and snuggling puppies.  Most of my time away from the clinic is spent with my husband, Jason, and our son Luke.  I enjoy hiking with my boys, baking and making pottery.  And of course, my life would not be complete without Kramer, the handsome Siamese cat that allows us to share his home.

Dr. Puja Nanayakkara

I joined Hartzel Animal Hospital in May 2016. I received my Masters of Science in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Guelph and subsequently my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ontario Veterinary College. After graduation I worked in a 24-hour clinic in the Hamilton area for two years before joining the Hartzel family. I have a special interest in emergency medicine, surgery and behaviour.

I currently live in Hamilton with my husband. We have a 9-year-old cat who was found as a stray many years ago in London, Ontario.  In my spare time I enjoy an active lifestyle, which includes running, golfing and spending time with my family.

I graduated from St. Lawrence College in Kingston in 1994. Since then I have worked as a veterinary technician starting my career in Bowmanville before moving to the Niagara Region in 1996. I was lucky enough to join the Hartzel team in 2007. Currently I live in Niagara Falls with my husband, Ron, two sons, Tyler and Keegan, two dogs, Dexter and Tucker and two cats, TJ and Toby. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, camping, hiking and reading.

After graduating from the Veterinary Technician program at St. Lawrence College in Kingston in 2004, I spent a few years working at a small animal clinic in my home city of Toronto. In 2008 my husband and I moved to St. Catharines and began working here at Hartzel Animal Hospital. I have two mischievous orange tabby’s Tigger and Piglet and Roo, an adorable yet stubborn Olde English Bulldogge. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband Jef and our daughter Addison. What I enjoy most about my job is knowing that I am a part of a team that practices high quality medicine and provides an exceptional level of compassionate care to both the patients and their owners.

I have worked as a veterinary assistant for 16 years. I attended West Coast College of Heath Care in British Columbia. I’m married with two children – two dogs, four cats and lizards. I enjoy working at Hartzel Animal Hospital because I feel that our clinic provides an exceptional level of care and this is reflected on a daily basis with pets and their owners.  I can’t imagine working at any other establishment.

I have been part of the Hartzel team since August of 1999.  I was born, raised and still live in the north end of St. Catharines. I have diplomas in both Business Administration and Animal Sciences.  I began my career at Hartzel as a kennel attendant and currently wear many hats including veterinary assistant and office manager.  I share my home with my husband, my cats and dog Terry.  When I am not working, you can find me enjoying kayaking, biking, playing tennis and spending time with family.

I performed various customer service roles before joining the Hartzel team in 2004.  I truly enjoy coming to work at the clinic and making connections with our clients and their pets.  I was born & raised in St. Catharines and developed a tremendous love & respect for animals at a young age.  I share my life with my husband Tom and our 5 rescued cats – Tony, Marty, Minnie, Rudy & Munchie and we always have a few pet rats too!

I have been a veterinary receptionist since 2001, and at Hartzel Animal Hospital since 2007.  I thoroughly enjoy the main aspects of my job:  greeting clients and their pets and keeping things organized.  My family includes my husband, son, Rottweiler Noah and two bratty cats, Skippy and Jilly-boo.  In my spare time I enjoy horseback riding, running and reading.

I graduated from Seneca College in King City as a Veterinary Technician in 2011, and in June of 2012, made Hartzel Animal Hospital my home.  I can mainly be found at the front desk working reception and occasionally in the back assisting and/or teching.   I have always had a dog in the family, and currently share my home with my spunky Yorkie/Jack Russel mix Winnie and of course my husband Cal.  I have a passion for horses and still love to attend events yearly like the Royal Winter Fair.  It’s easy to say animals have been a huge part of my life.  Big or small, being in an environment that enables me to help animals on a daily basis has been more than rewarding.

I have always known that I wanted to work with animals and Hartzel has been the perfect place to pursue that passion. I have completed many co-op positions throughout my school years and once I graduated from Georgian College in 2014 with a diploma in Veterinary Technology, I started my RVT position here shortly thereafter. I currently live in Welland with my boyfriend Mitchell, our energetic Collie/Retriever mix Harvey, and our 2 mischievous black cats, Louie and Gilbert. I share a special interest in exotics and have volunteered abroad working in a Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Guatemala. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and am the outdoorsy type who loves to go hiking and camping.”
